In a big push to country’s nuclear power programme, 10 units of indigenous Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) of 700 MW each will go a long way in enriching country’s nuclear mix. A fully home grown initiative and a flagship ‘Make in India’ projects, it would ultimately lead to an overall augmentation of India’s nuclear power generation capacity.

At present India has 22 operational nuclear power reactors which are generating 6780 MW power jointly. This capacity is likely to be enhanced by another 6700 MW through projects under construction by 2021-22. However, the government target is to increase the nuclear capacity of the country to 14000 MW by 2024. Besides, giving a much-needed fillip to nuclear sector, the decision to construct 10 more PHWRs will create 33,400 jobs besides imparting manufacturing orders to the tune of Rs 70,000 crore to domestic industry and manufacturers.  The project will help transform country’s nuclear sector by linking it with the country’s indigenous industrial capacities in high-end technologies. The move will establish India as a major nuclear manufacturing powerhouse pushing government’s  clean energy goals and low-carbon growth strategy.

The step by the Centre will not only take the country on the path to energy self- sufficiency but will also give a boost to combat climate change and global warming
