Whenever we think about nuclear power plant, the first thing that strikes our mind is destruction. Destruction either in form of using it as weapon or if we use it for construction purpose, people thought that its radiation might harm us. But is that really true?  There are so many myths behind generating nuclear energy through power plant. Firstly is that Nuclear power plants spreads radiation which is injurious to health. A myth has also created that pregnant women residing near the area of nuclear plants can’t conceive or give birth to baby. All these myths are absolutely fake. NPCIL spends huge amount on the safety and security of such plants, that’s why, initially these plants are quite expensive.

Recently I got the chance to visit NAPS (Narora Atomic Power Station) to analyze the truth behind all such myths and the results are absolutely amazing.   They divided the whole plant nearby areas into different layers. The first layer is Exclusive Area of 1.6km, where there is no habitat. The second layer is Sterilized Area of 5 km which consist of agricultural land. In this area no other human activity or industrial work is permitted. And the third and final layer is Emergency Area which covers 16 km of surroundings where villagers and working staff reside.
An Environment survey Lab is also build within that area, which monitor the dose of radiation effect in the environment. They collect samples and examine them and assure the minimal radiation in environment. It is an independent body.

The best part in generating energy through nuclear power plant is the formula of minimum wastage. Considering Thermal Power Plant which generates 66.92% of power in India, exposes maximum waste in form of ashes. Whereas nuclear power plant is based on nuclear fission method, which helps in generating electricity by making environment clean and healthy.
At the end, what we can conclude is that awareness is the only tools that can create understanding and awareness among people and helps in breaking the myth.
