The agencies, involved in promoting nuclear energy as a safe alternative source to cater to world’s energy needs, are continuously making efforts to strengthen radiation safety at different levels with various countries playing an active role across the globe.

Radiation safety aims at protecting the public and environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, which has many beneficial uses in medicine, science and industry. Measures to ensure that radiation safety is maintained at the highest level are vital when using nuclear applications for peaceful purposes, once said Juan Carlos Lentijo, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security. However, the international collaboration among countries is a clear reflection of the on-going commitment to safety against radiation.

The need to keep pace with advances in nuclear technology makes it imperative to add elements to it accordingly in order to strengthen safety measures and regulations. The atomic energy watchdog IAEA had engaged Conference of Radiation Programme Control Directors (CRCPD), a non-profit non-governmental organization in the United States dedicated to radiation protection for Practical Arrangements some two years back.
